To experience Bahamian art, culture, heritage, and music, you should make plans to attend the 30th Anniversary of the Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival. The traditional music of The Bahamas is Goombay, which combines the musical traditions from Africa with that of the European colonial influence. Goombay, the Bantu word for "rhythm," also refers to the type of goatskin drum used to produce the rolling rhythm of this type of music. The Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival is a celebration of cultural expression. Embracing the legacy of a Bahamian rooted community called “The Grove." The festival is a two day fun-filled event with an energetic, colorful parade of brightly cotumed people gyrating and dancing to the rhythmic accompaniment of cowbells, drums and whistles. Always the “star” of the festival is the Royal Bahamas Police Band, a 55-member internationally acclaimed musical group comprised of the islands police force, plays in both march and concert style. Also a native junkanno group which further creates the festive Bahamian atmosphere.
The festival also creates a “Miami” atmosphere which highlights the NBA Rhythm and Rims Showcase; an interactive 18-wheeler transforming vehicle, which unfolds into a basketball theme park for all ages, and a wide variety of entertaining basketball and musical activities sponsored by AOL, Adidas, EAC Sports, Handspree Nokia, T’Mobile, and Toyota. Also, local and national recording artist from various musical genres will be performing along the strip of Grand avenue. As Local and National Exhibitors prepare to share their authentic Bahamian and American cuisine with you I say you better prepare to come Goombay with us! The street festival will transform Grand Avenue into a journey across the ocean creating a perfect harmony between the rich Caribbean culture of the Bahamas and the strong African-American vibes. It’s about the old and the new sharing experiences and celebrating as one.
Each year over 300,000 people come together in celebration of a culture rich in History and tradition. The festival has grown to become the largest Black Heritage Festival in the United States. Exhibitors and tourists travel from near and far to be a part of this historical extravaganza. As a result, the Miami/Bahamas Goombay festival brings an estimated $21 million in revenues to the City of Miami each year.
